About the Residency

We are located in Livingston, NY, a 15-min drive from the city of Hudson.

Each Interlude family stays in a private two-bedroom area. Artists and families have access to shared spaces: a generously sized kitchen, dining room, den, screen porch, and beautiful grounds including a child-size art studio. The property is routinely maintained by a professional cleaning service.

Artists have 24-hour access to private studios.

As each artist and their families have different needs, we approach childcare through individualized advanced planning. Artists are matched with vetted childcare providers who can come on site to care for children, or with local camps and other programming as needed and desired. We also support artists who wish to bring an additional family member, such as a grandparent, to stay at Interlude along with them to provide childcare.

FAQ

For application questions, please see our apply page.

  • Sessions are typically 3 to 4 weeks in length.

  • There are two studios on site, both with beautiful views, lofted areas, heating, A/C, WIFI, and sink access. While artists can work in any media, no highly toxic materials or materials with fumes may be used. We do not have ceramics facilities, a kiln, a wood shop, or power tools.

  • We offer a welcome dinner and usually two weekly family-style evening meals during each residency. The kitchen is always stocked with basic food staples for breakfast and lunch. There's a grocery store/pharmacy and several farm stands nearby. The region is full of great restaurants, shopping options, and farms, all within a short drive. We can help accommodate food restrictions, allergies, and diets.

  • No, but residents are encouraged to participate in elective visits with area art professionals and artists. Periodic evening meals (usually two per week) are meant to bring participants together, and you are encouraged to attend these as well. While sometimes life events come up, residents are expected to spend at least 80% of their residency on site.

  • Typically, two resident artists and their families share the property each session. Residents are expected to live and work on site during their session, but we recognize that sometimes life intervenes. Artists are free to bring their families or to come alone.

We carefully match each artist/family unit with each other to align creative interests as well as family composition and approach to the residency. For example, we endeavor to match the ages of children who will be on site together.

Each family has their own bedrooms and bathrooms within the house and each artist has their own studio. The kitchen and common spaces are shared. There is a shared den/library, dining room with an upright piano, a large eat-in kitchen, and a screened-in porch. All bedrooms have air conditioning and heating. The studio spaces are separate from the house so artists will have the focus they need. Quiet hours in the house are from 9pm-7am.

  • We have sleeping options for kids of all ages. The home is equipped with highchairs, a travel crib, stair gates, and some childproofing. There are play areas outside and a mini kid’s studio, bikes, scooters, helmets, a board game collection, a basketball hoop, children’s art supplies, a kid-only play nook, toys, books for all ages, and a TV with streaming services. We can help match you with childcare as needed, including vetted sitters in the area, ideas for summer camps or nearby attractions, libraries, lakes, hikes, etc.

  • Our Resident Manager lives off-site but comes to care for the facilities and help with logistics. Other programming staff are off-site.

  • Residents are highly encouraged to arrive with their own vehicle. Our residency is in Glenco Mills, a hamlet in the town of Livingston, 2 hours from Manhattan. It is rural, and a car is necessary. The closest city is Hudson, a 15 min drive There are Amtrak (15 minutes) and Metro North (25 minutes) train stations nearby. There are also taxi and car services available. Several kid and adult bikes and helmets are available for local jaunts.

  • The closest hospital is Columbia Memorial in Hudson, a 15-minute drive. There are several urgent care facilities in the area and a pharmacy at the local Hannaford’s, 5-minutes away.

  • At the time, our facilities are not fully ADA compliant. However, we are working toward that goal as accessibility of all kinds is important to us.

  • Interlude is a 501c3 charitable organization that provides residencies to the artists and their families free of charge. Additionally, residents receive a stipend (currently $595) to defray the costs of travel, childcare, and materials. We require a $25 application fee which helps pay our jury and for administrative costs.

It blew my mind when I learned about Interlude and its advocacy for artist parents, and I was baffled upon the realization that its existence was singular. I am deeply grateful for the time and space afforded to me to focus on my practice, and for the recognition and inclusion of my child within that process. The community we built will last a lifetime, and is a model I am grateful to have shared with my family.
