Application guidelines & selection criteria

We select residents through an open call juried by 18 art professionals, artists, and curators. Equity is central to our mission, and we seek out and select diverse candidates. Jurors reflect a broad set of backgrounds and approaches.

Last open call, 40 residents were chosen from over 450 applicants in a multi-stage process. Our application process is simple and affordable to minimize barriers. Selection is based on artistic merit. From the most qualified artists, we assemble a cohort with a diversity of voices. We care to include local artists from the Hudson Valley as well as artist couples.

  • Now! Our current Call is Open from January 7, 2026 through March 7, 2026. Please click here to be directed to the application portal.

  • Our application process has two rounds. From the entire pool of applicants, we identify a group of Finalists. Finalists submit additional information, including a residency plan and scheduling availability/preferences.

  • Our application is $25. Funds generated from applications go toward managing the process and paying our jury. If this cost is prohibitive, please contact us for a discount or a waiver.

  • If you present your work as a collaborative, submit a single application. If you have separate artistic practices, each artist should submit a separate application.

  • International applicants are welcome and encouraged to apply, though we cannot provide visa sponsorship or assistance.

  • We welcome applications from all visual artists, including performance, video, and audio artwork. If your work is shown in an art context, we encourage you to apply. We do not currently have the capacity to review applications from writers, dancers & choreographers, or other forms that fall outside the visual arts.

  • Interlude Residency is intended for artists who are primary caregivers in any capacity to children under 18.

  • The application process is juried by a diverse international panel of 18 visual artists, curators, writers, and other arts professionals from the Hudson Valley and beyond. Applications are evaluated on the merit of the work.

I felt profound validation just for being a professional artist AND mother–perhaps for the first time in my 16 years of living those dual roles.
